Whether you are deciding to attempt your first triathlon, marathon or other endurance race, there
are a few factors to consider.
Once you determine which race or races you want to do, find the date and work backwards to
determine when to begin focused training for the event. For example, if you are interested in an
Olympic distance triathlon in May, then you will need a minimum of 16 weeks to train. In other
words you would need to start training in January! See chart below to help determine when to
start training based on the race distance and when it is. The next step is to find a training plan or
coach to help you achieve your goal. TriPipeline.com can help with training plans starting at 2.95
and customized training programs starting 39.95.

The next important question is where is your race? Do you need to travel or is it in your town?
There are many advantages to having a local race. The first is you get to sleep in your own bed
and eat your pre-race meal at home. These are definite advantages as proper fuel and rest prior
to the big day are big components in how your race will go. Second, you have the advantage of
running the course ahead of time. All triathlons and marathons publish the race routes prior to the
race date. The route may change, but that is rare. Finally, you don't need to pack everything and
hope you don't forget any of your gear. It is a lot easier to run home and get something you need
rather then trying to find a store and buy the missing piece.
Travelling to races can also add a bit of excitement. The race course is something you probably
have never been on before. Many races are in some of the most beautiful areas of the country
and the scenery can be phenomenal! Another benefit is adding a vacation by extending the visit a
few days and enjoying some relaxing days at your destination. Keep in mind things like how you
are going to get to the destination. If you fly, how are you going to ship your bike and gear. If you
drive, think about the additional fatigue on your body. Finally, think about any altitude changes you
may encounter.
